Did you know that many cities have so many parks that they don't even have parking lots? Yeah, you can just walk to your neighborhood park in those cities; but not in LA. Los Angeles has some of the best weather in the country, but ironically it's also one of the most park poor cities in the country (most people in LA can't just walk to Griffith Park or Venice Beach). And there are a lot of pow...
Why the Best Parts of Los Angeles Resemble a Mall

People like going to malls, like Westfield Century City, The Grove, and Ovation. Maybe our cities should be designed more like malls? This is a re-upload of my previous video, with a newly edited introduction to see if the algorithm will like this video better. New video in 2 weeks! The LA streetcar map in the video was developed by Jake Berman. You can buy a print of it here: 53studio.com/prod...

If you look at a city undergoing change the same way you look at a person undergoing change, you're more likely to be understanding of the underlying issues causing the problematic behavior in the first place. And the more understanding you have of the situation, the better prepared you will be in dealing with the eventual relapse. This video introduces the idea of harm reduction. You may be pa...
Don't Confuse Places We Drive Through With Places We Drive To (Especially in Culver City)

LA is full of places that put outdoor dining next to busy roads, and one city in the area is trying to get rid of the one street that addresses the issue. This is essentially 2 videos sandwiched together - a 10-minute introduction to the idea of a stroad, and then an 8-minute defense of how Culver City should not allow it's main street to get infested with cars again. ua-cam.com/video/SouLTUsVa...

Great video. But adding living accommodation (2 or 3 floors) above the businesses would also make sense. LA has a really low density.

Its a shame that some of the best weather in the nation is wasted on some of the worst urban design. Could you imagine how awesome LA would be with good cycling infrastructure and public transit? Also did I see that right? The second most common cause of pediatric death in the country is gun violence? What the hell...

LA isn't really flat unless you're talking about the city proper. The broader metropolitan area aka Suburban LA is all mountains and valleys which is why you freeze your ass in the burbs in winter while its a burning hot desert in the summers

Something I think you only brushed up against when discussing the market area is that most cities have mixed used commercial/residentail properties and that all those restaurants in downtown culver would normally have apartments on top of them. The result of those more condensed apartments would mean the market area wouldn't need to be as big.

Nope… they actually need better security … the cops should actually patrol bus routes instead of harassing people who are going to work … I cycle to work and THE COPS keep stopping me for making a left !!! WTF, they scream orders instead of understanding regardless if they are WRONG or right… LAPD DOES NOT KNOW about the laws on the road for cycling … god help us, this is what happens when education is devalued and being aggressive is celebrated, you have the world filled with angry people who are all enemies instead of community ….

I live in LA, near downtown, and usually walk 3-4 days/week. The parks nearest me are a 20 minute walk and a 25 minute walk to get to. My favorite park is a 3 mile drive, and some honorable mentions are a 7.5 mile drive and a 14 mile drive. My neighborhood is not super pedestrian-friendly, so getting my walk in definitely takes a bit of planning!

You brought up a lot of concepts from diverse topics-from health to urban planning to business-that I hadn’t heard of before. And I sure didn’t realize they could be related in ways that affect where I live and work. I think this is what we need more of in our discourse.

Idealistic approach. The assumption here is that the residents here in Culver City are naive/misinformed/lack information about the situation at hand. But the real reason why Culver City's transit project reverted is because of powerful local interests (NIMBYs, wealthy older residents) that have direct access to city council and influence their decisions. Only way to deal with this is to politically organize and fight.

The traffic is down so much during the summer so clearly theres a heavy load from students. It just doesn’t make any sense to me. I love all your suggestions and I have thought up the exact same thing in some cases. See you around!

Flawed logic creating more traffic through neighborhoods. I drive DTCC daily. Visually, DTCC is one lane hell, but a block away by my office at Sony is two lanes and it flows. People consume more than they can carry, which means public transit, that is already unsafe, makes you go to the market multiple times a week. Parking spaces are narrow, meaning even the common Model Y is kind of jammed in a spot. The bus and bike lanes have high capacity, but if you count the number of people in cars versus very infrequent buses and it is a factor of at least 10x. Nobody rides the bus in rush hour and moving to Venice makes it far worse there than the hell it already is. I drive from Beverly Hills north-south, to dog daycare, then to Sony. It is longer for the 1 mile from daycare to Sony than Beverly Hills to daycare. I made a mistake one day to go from Sony to LACMA.

I don’t get responses back and the neighborhood council just look at me weird. It’s going to take time but I think we can close a couple streets within a couple of years. What else can I do???

This is really sad to watch - there is hope that action will be taken but it seems incredibly slow. In the UK where I live, many councils talk a good talk but relatively few take real action. I live in one of the few that do (Edinburgh) and while we now spend a fixed percentage of our roads budget on active travel,it is still not enough

None of these SUV vehicles have any business to be allowed to even go that fast, theyre no sportcars, theyre not track cars, they are simple transportation machines, machines we can control. This issue has plagued LA for decades, and it only seemed to have gotten worse. As in the old West when firearms were ban in certain towns when entering. Vehicles should be banned or altered to only go a certain speed in each County or City. Most Cars should at the very least go 30 to 40mph.

11:35 - I've lived in LA for 40+ years. The disaster that is the Beverly Center used to be painted brown. We called it the Brown Turd. 13:01 - Every time I see a pre-1950 map of Los Angeles transit my heart breaks. Right here, I can see the line that runs just a half-block from where I live now. Every time I cross that street walking to the grocery store, I sense the tracks that are still buried underneath and imagine what it would be like to just hop on and go to the beach. Or to the mountains. They were all accessible from a just a half-block away. Sigh. 17:53 - That looks heavenly.

    • @SgtMustang
      @SgtMustang 2 місяці тому

Regarding pre 1950s transit, I think you might be interested in looking up the realities of the "street car" system and whether or not you actually would have used it. The implementation was quite bad, and they died out because they had an unsustainable business model, and because busses were much better. LA's streetcars were basically just worse busses with more infrastructure.
